American Landfill constructs surface water control structures designed to meet the 25-year storm requirements. In general, the surface control structures include sedimentation ponds with ancillary structures associated with each pond such as riser pipe, emergency spill way, inlet structures, outlet discharge pipe, and channels. In addition to the surface water control structure, American Landfill is required to construct erosion control components: down-slope channels, rock channels, installation of culverts, silt traps, check dams, establishment of vegetation, and installation of ancillary components that dissipate surface water velocity.

American Landfill also implements best management practices such as use of additional silt traps, installation of baffle curtains in the pond to increase retention time, and use of a sodium hydroxide system to adjust the pH of acid mine drainage from the mining areas.
